The incredible journey of COVID-19 vaccines


By mid 2022 - over 18 months on from the beginning of this vaccine journey - nearly nine out of ten EU adults have now been vaccinated, that is 86% of the EU adult population. There have been over 1.7 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines delivered in the EU.

The EU already reached an important milestone in the fight against COVID-19 in October 2021, with three out of four EU adults vaccinated. Since then, new challenges have arisen and there is no shortage of more still ahead, but in the fight against COVID-19, EU countries are stronger together.

The introduction of booster jabs was a necessary step in the fight against new variants. By early 2022, over 50% of the EU population had taken their additional booster dose.

The speed at which the many pieces of the puzzle were fitted together to protect people from the coronavirus is a tale of scientific innovation and ingenuity backed by continuous cooperation, timely political decisions and enormous medical and logistical efforts.

What made it possible? Let’s take a moment to follow the journey of COVID-19 vaccines from their invention in a laboratory to their administration to people across Europe and beyond.

While governments around the world took measures to limit the spread of the virus, hundreds of scientific research teams looked for new ways to give people protection. As soon as the nature of the virus was identified and understood, they started developing new technological approaches to vaccination.

It was over 18 months ago that the first COVID-19 vaccine was authorised for use in the EU. During this short but critical period, nearly nine out of ten adults in the EU have been fully vaccinated.

Early on, EU countries decided to act as a bloc and speak with one voice when buying vaccines from pharmaceutical companies. They pooled their resources and made joint purchase agreements.

The aim was to spread and share the risk and speed up development. By supporting a wide range of possible vaccines from multiple manufacturers using different technologies, EU countries increased their chance of securing supplies of safe and effective vaccines.

Without Europe, it would not have been possible to develop and produce several types of vaccines in less than one year. Without Europe, many countries would not yet have received their first doses. The goal was to avoid competition and bidding between countries, and to allow all countries to obtain the doses at the same time.

From the early days of the pandemic, the EU took action to come to grips with the crisis. As early as March 2020, EU leaders met in the European Council and agreed on key priorities for their common action. From then on, leaders and ministers met more regularly than usual to coordinate their efforts and keep them moving in the same direction.

EU countries coordinated measures to counter the spread of the virus and overcome the economic and social consequences of the pandemic. They showed solidarity, supporting each other in the distribution of vaccines and providing medical equipment to those most in need.
Parallel to this, the EU worked with the pharmaceutical industry to ensure deliveries of vaccines both to EU countries and globally

Svetainėje taip pat pateikiama informacija ir gairės, kaip atpažinti interneto robotus ir sąmokslo teorijas.
